Area Activities

Taupo has many great activities! Try out exciting adrenaline-pumping activities, like bungy jumping, rafting or sky-diving. Lake Taupo also has more leisurely things to see and do, such as fishing, sight-seeing, wine trails, golf, thermal pools or just cruising the great shopping area.

We have free information and brochures on many activities for you at reception and will be more than happy to help you plan or book when here.

Fishing

The Taupo fishery is famous world-wide for its incredible fishing and even better scenery! Both Rainbow and Brown trout abound in these fantastic waters. No matter how good your angling skills are (or not, as the case may be) there will be something to suit your tastes.

Adventure

The Taupo area is truly the adventure capital of the world. Try rafting, kayaking, sailing, 4-wheel off-road driving, horseback riding, snow boarding or ski-ing, mountain biking, jet boating, helicopter flights, caving, rock climbing, hiking, parasailing, water ski-ing, bungy jumping… the list is endless!

Three superb eighteen hole courses, including the world-renowned Wairakei International and two very good nine-hole courses all within a 15-minute drive from Taupo township.

Hiking

There are many trails to follow in the Taupo area, including round-the-lake walks, riverside treks, bush walks and mountain trails. Maps for these hikes are available form the Taupo Information Centre on the main road.

Lake Cruises

Cruise our fantastic lake aboard a sailboat or motor boat. You can also charter a private launch for fishing, or simply take in the stunning scenery, including a trip to see the Maori Rock Carvings.

Spas

Ease those aching muscles from all those adrenaline pursuits you've been enjoying! Spoil yourself with some pampering at one of several spa facilities available in the area, including the natural hot mineral waters of Taupo Hot Springs Spa.

  • Waitomo Caves, famous for its black water rafting and glow worms.
  • Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage Park and home to three volcanoes and two ski fields, and many beautiful hikes, including the Tongariro Crossing, one of the most spectacular one-day hikes in New Zealand.
  • Hawkes Bay, famous for its wine as well as the art deco architecture of Napier and several beautiful beaches.
  • Rotorua, New Zealand's version of Yellowstone, with active geysers, mud pools, mineral spas and Maori culture.
  • Whakatane, where you can take a boat out to the active volcano on White Island, charter a fishing boat for the day, or enjoy swimming in the Pacific Ocean at Ohope Beach
